Day 4 reflections

Day 4: March 25, 2012 Kayla C; Mya H; Isabella N; Rebecca F At Betsy’s Pancake House, it was great because we got to sit in smaller groups (four-tops), the service was really fast, and they were true to their word about their pancakes (chocolate chips!) being the best. In the Lower 9th Ward, it was sad to see the destruction. It made you realize how fortunate you are because it was clearly hit the worst. Even though we had to wait a long time for Mac (our service guy) to arrive, we still had fun, telling stories and sleeping in the vans. The work was good because we alternated between the garden and the lot…we pulled up all the weeds, especially with the help of Ms. Nelson, who knew everything about gardening. And we avoided the red ant hills when we were hacking away at the grass. It was cool when the guy set the ant hill on fire! And we made a big difference through our hard work. We then picked up po’ boys for a picnic lunch along the Mississippi River. There was a homeless woman who was seeking some food, so we gave her one our sandwiches. She was very appreciative and that made us feel good. For free time, we walked around and bonded with our friends, saw street performers (the talent of New Orleans!), and shopped for family. It was nice to have all that freedom. At Mulates, it was cool that we got to learn Cajun dancing. I danced with a “little old man” who was a professional dancer. He had a washboard that he played with spoons and he began this long line of dancers. For dinner, everything on my plate was fried (I even bit into the crab shell, but I didn’t know – and it all tasted like chicken) Ice cream was fun because we got to go back and try new flavors. Tomorrow we leave…☹
