Day 3: March 24, 2012 Caroline M; Devon M; Olivia T; Sydney F We woke up at 6:50 to a very annoying alarm, got ready, and headed out to Mother’s again (this time, they did not take our name with our order, so it took a long time, especially if you got waffles). Before we started our service work, we met with the man from Trees for Katrina, who told us the story about Katrina – the reasons for the flooding, how high the water was, etc. Planting trees was fun and really hard work – we all had our signature digging moves (e.g., the “staccato stab”); Mr. Shawe used the pick axe to get a “rock” only to find it was a water pipe (it did not break, thankfully) A man in the neighborhood clapped and said, “Good job!” which made us feel appreciated. We rushed from lunch to the boat tour; saw really cool animals – like the yellow bird (warbler), alligator, snakes, birds with the really big beaks (ibis), great blue heron, turtles (sliders and soft-shelled), and an otter…and it was really nice weather On van way back to hotel, we listened to the voodoo station, sang songs, and had a party on the van Walked to dinner (Crescent City Brewery), where there was live music, and we tried oysters and mussels. Then we sat on the steps across from Jackson Square and listened to Mr. and Mrs. Klick tell their story about Katrina. We also ate beignets (they melted in your mouth!); we also saw a strange man come close to us, but – not to worry - Ms. Edma gave him her “evil stare” and he went away. We debriefed at the hotel where we shared our highs and lows of the day. Until tomorrow…
